btw , the weather here is just ridiculously nice.
we are getting mid 70's to just into 80's and at night 58,59 & 60.
the high humidity is also gone and its just peachy perfect!

We were apart of the snow storm that hit across the north. About 3" here, but the next town over had 12" and northern towns had close to 20" of snow.
There were more power outages for this storm than hurricane Irene, about 600,000 still without power.

I don't install plank tile, not yet anyway. So I have no problem with Brian being there.

We'll even bring our fine Italian cooking for ya Brian. Anything to avoid another winter like we had last year.

Sorry bout your luck Joe... I've often wondered if you can make up a long pigtail (male both ends) and connect it to a 220 receptacle in the house or garage, and electrify both banks in the breaker box... I want to have one made up so's I can try it out but since you have no electricity maybe you can... First ya need to get a workin generator though...

Frank, if you try that you gotta make sure your service entry box has a main breaker or disconnect and that you are very careful to open that any time you're supplying your own power. Gotta be real careful to do that.

Now, I know you're special, but I still doubt your local 'lectric company is gonna call you before they turn the power back on at your house and you really don't want both of y'all trying to supply your needs. Trying to parallel two AC sources of power is not a good eye-dee.

There is also the very real danger (I'm told) of you supplying power to the incoming power lines whilst the 'lectric company might have someone working on the lines. I can't much imagine them doing that without the usual precautions, but I can see their guy presuming the lines to be dead when in reality ol' Frank is trying to light'em up again.

Commercially available generator backup systems are installed with an automatic switching arrangement to avoid any such possibility.

But if you shut off that main breaker, you should be able to do what you're suggesting if you open all the individual breakers to the circuits in the house you don't want to supply. Would amount to the same as un-plugging individual appliances and plugging them into the generator.

And you'd wanna be really careful with that pigtail and not be foolin' with the tag end whilst you got the other end plugged into whichever source is hot, eh? Be sad for ol' Roger to have no one with whom to have high-level intellectual arguments, non? And Ms. Fredia might miss you, too.

I'm uncertain whether the circuit breaker for the circuit to which you connect the generator can make a distinction about which side of it is the supply side and whether it would still be able to detect an overload and protect the wiring on its normally out-going side. Can't imagine that it wouldn't, but it's something I'd not thought about until you done axed that question.

Joe,,, You are right. please do not plug your generator in to your house wiring.

The only safe way to power items in your house without using an extension cord is to have a Double Pole Double Throw (DPDT) transfer switch and sub panel installed. It's an expensive proposition, but is the only legal way to connect a generator to your house wiring!

We just use extension cords and only power what is critical only as long as needed such as keeping the fridge frozen (with the help of ice)and charging phones and batteries.
My poor father in law had a switch put in and last time he had to use it, put the generator to close to the house. By the time we were able to check on them he had melted the siding off his house.

We finally got our power back last night. 20" of Snow! Spent two days plowing. Taking care of two elderly parents. Work is at a standstill. No power in most of the area. We were lucky. Our neighbors had a fire two nights ago in one of the bedrooms. Thank god they got out and the fire dept. responded so quickly. Cant convince the better half to move south.

Dave, good to see you have power. We still have over 500,000 without power and they're talking about a good week before they can restore everybody.

I had a job today that needed a generator just to get the job finished. And to think, it's not even winter yet.

You guys get nervous about someone posting a tile installation method that isn't TCA approved. But now we will discuss methods for back feeding a house which will lead to death (homeowners or lineman) if done incorrectly!

My answer...if you can afford a big enough generator to power your house you can afford the proper transfer switch and electrician to install it! Otherwise use extension cords.
