I searched the site and couldn't find this.

Has anyone attempted a diagonal wall layout in a shower, and have the diagonal wall wrap into and back out of a niche?

i don't think you can technically "wrap" that pattern because the length that the pattern has to cover is longer in the the niche than the surrounding wall (the depth of the niche multiplied by 2)......now, you could use the standard bullnose on the inside edge and then continue the diagonal pattern on the back of the niche only, so that when you stand back it looks like its continuous, but you would not be able to actually "wrap" those inside edges with the diagonal pattern, and have it meet up with the surrounding wall on the other side

however, you might be able to wrap the pattern from all four sides into the niche, and then place a carefully sized square piece of tile in the center of the back of the niche (layed on the diagonal) to compensate for the gap in the pattern caused by the depth of the niche, i don't know how good that would look though?? might be cool

You're mking my head hurt. I suppose you could try this with some square notebook paper and mockup of a shower w/niche. The niche would have to be centered to start the layout. Meanwhile, I'll go get you an ice pack and a tall beer.

Yeah its like the math in the " Keystone" thread. I'm thinking I will let the back of the niche have the same line or grout joint as the wall. And then just use straight pieces on the sides.

Rick has it right, there's no way to wrap into and back out of a niche. The best you could do would be to match the back of the niche to the diag pattern.

John, your idea about using straight pcs on the sides should work fine except watch out for a long span between grout lines. The tile is longer diagonal than the edges so the side pieces may end up too short depending on how big the niche is and how the layout aligns with it. I vote go for it (I think it will look cool.

Alternately there are some really cool layouts that negate this problem.. Check out Trask's last entry into the super long tread about craziest tile design. He made a border around the niche with field tiles and did a different treatment inside.

The designer didn't specifiy that it wrap. She just wanted the niche to disappear into the wall. No other color or material to draw attention to it.

As I was staring at it the other day. It occurred to me that on day some designer would ask that it wrap. Hence asking you guys..

LOL, it CAN be done!! Your niche just has to be the perfect depth so that the linear measurement of the niche sides and back equals one or 2 or 3 tiles and joint length corner to corner.

Know what I mean? No I have never done it, but the way to do it would be to bring the 2 sides in and then mud out the back to the proper depth.

Of course most times you only have a 3 1/2 stud cavity, so the options are limited.

I did a shower just a few weeks ago, where I screwed up time in framing my niche. I made it a 1/2" to short vertically for the design of the shower/layout of the shower. I ended up picture framing the bullnose and making a custom deco stip for the customer. I continued the diagonal of the deco through to the back and not on the sides and was not pleased at all with the way it turned out. They really loved it and thought I went above and beyond, but I don't think it looks right. I don't have any other pics as the job is not done yet I finished to the ceiling, and grouted but have to wait for the glass to go back and put on the bullnose. All they originally wanted was a 2 row strip of the 2x2 squares which are used on the shower floor. Like I said I screwed up when framing my niche and would have left me 5/16" - 3/8" grout joint above niche. So I used the bath floor tile for the big white diamonds. I couldn't make it wrap right into the niche so continued it through on the main walls, and put a slightly bigger piece on the back of the niche. You can't tell from pic but on inside corner of shower that piece wraps then next to it I have a tiny triangle that would flow to piece on other side of niche. The niche side walls are what makes this one look bad.

Yea geueze that wouldn't work unless you had a small tile. Definitely not alot of depth to work with in the niches.

I keep waiting for someone to ask me to do this as well....and then having to hurt their feelings.

Most times I go for the "sunken wall" look myself, continuing the grout lines along the backwall and using bullnose on the sides. I like this look best cause I don't think a niche should stand out and scream "look at me."

Though occasionally, a HO or a Builder will veto this idea and just ask me to put a full tile in the back of the niche, which personally I think looks like garbage but they're the ones paying the bills....
