Diy gone bad

who woulda thought?

this is a side job Im doing, trading my chiropractor for disc decompression therapy for my back. Im 26, but feel 96 so when I found out he installed his own floor I jumped at the chance.

turns out the install itself was pretty damn good for a guy in his 50's that has never set tile. Minimal lippage, solid bond, no hollows and only a few grout joints didnt line up

THEN, he took a belt sander to some high spots and put a clear acrylic corating over it

I dont have before pics cause the lighting is terrible but I only did about 1/3 of the house. I will be doing the rest in inetrvals so Ill get some before pics then.

1 1/2 days, 550 feet. flattened, up to 220 resin then 220 honing powder.

heres a closeup of the joints after finishing. If only he used a better color you wouldnt be able to see them. ALL the joints came out dead flush.

flatter than flat

finally finished

It took a while for us to get around to making the Ipe floor for this shower. The pan is 4" lower than the floor in the room, with a regular tiled shower pan. The Ipe is 3/4 wide by 1.5" deep. We used stainless spacers and stainless rods to hold them together horizontally, and stainless screws from the bottom to tie it all together. The center section is easily lifted up, the outer 2 sections have legs. The niches are hidden in the pony wall to the right.

Looks nice Davy. Did you fat mud that or were you able to use a thick or medium bed thinset?

Dave, I do the edges with a floor machine, never have to get down on my hands and knees anymore. If you want info, I'd be happy to share.

Thanks guys but I don't take any credit for the design, I was born without that particular gene. I just stick tiles to the walls.

I am fortunate to work with a talented number of designers and architects. The HO designed that Ipe floor himself, I just added the functional bits to make it removable and cleanable and figured out how to hide all the screws
