I drywall mine first saves on a scratch coat. We've done them both ways. Scratch and a float takes about twice as much cement.

Brian,

What are your thoughts so far on the Hydrobarrier v.s Kerdi? Do you have alot more time involved so far?

If you are talking about a one-coat v. a two-coat it certainly is a mud job. It's been done that way in the Western U.S. for a long long time.

um yeah i agree with John, we used to use rock lath under our mud walls and 1 coated em this meant no scratch coat and just a plumb coat. It was harder to install the wire this way, rocklath got too expensive so we switched to a scratch coat system and then plumbcoat the next day with the wire going over the open bays instead of ontop of the rocklath.

I bet if you really did the math on the two it's not that much more to one coat.

One coat = need a backer .

One day float vs. Two coat = coming back the next day on a two day. Plus a lot more cement which needing more bags could cost twice as much depending on the walls.

Labor vs. Backer = Not sure what's more after all that is figured. Unless your doing a few showers in the same house that you can set up a kind of assembly line.

Just two cents.

I never used drywall behind our mud up North when I started out.
especially on the commercial showers. it was all paper or plastic, wire & mud.
I ripped out some jobs over the years like that and always thought it was a fast way out mud wall.

I would say about the same. except for missing the day after doing the shower floor. durock was done and mud floor, waited a day. but the 2 coats of HydroBarrier was actually very easy and nice to work with. I did my fabric in the corners, mesh taped the durock, notch troweled on the first coat and then went to lunch, the fan dried it easy in an hour. covered the shower floor and flat troweled on the final coat.

as usual with the liquids you'll have to wait for the mud to dry and also the membrane to dry before you can start setting on it.

but the Hydro Barrier was great to use and has a good feel to it.

No way just a one step instead of two. No different in thickness as doing just cement board. Except it's flatter.

Homza it can be floated same day just depends on how big a shower that it is.

Laticrete made the price better on this.
smells and feels just like RedGard or HydroBan.
dried pretty quick too while I took a lunch.

why even bother putting up drywall and then doing a 1/2" mud.
that's why cementboard was invented. I did many regular mud walls back North,
but wouldn't consider a thin quickie like that.

One thing is it's still gonna be a monolithic float. It's tied all together still all the way to the shower pan. Plus unless you fixing the framing then the cement board just wraps whatever is outta wack.

Hay to each his own for me it's an acceptable method an I'd much rather have 800 pounds of cement upstairs in a shower than to have 1300 pounds up there.

the difference between the Hydrobarrier and Hydroban besides the color?

Both are THIN liquid applied, seamless waterproof & anti-fracture membranes from a reliable, reputable company with in-depth technical support.

The differences:

The HydroBarrier - requires fabric at corners & coves

The HydroBan - no fabric required for most applications.

The HydroBan dries faster and is ready for flood test or tiling sooner.
