done with a grinder.
make pressed template of the drain on a piece of cardboard.
cut it out of the cardboard, mark the tile and then trace the inside of the cardboard on the tile. cut the tile with the grinder on the inside of the pencil line.
the trick is after you have the inside cut out of the tile. you can clean up the tile with the side of the grinder blade every tiny bit to keep the radius or use your nippers from the inside. to clean up the inside radius.
I'm trying to ask the Super's on the job once we are awarded the job to have the plumbers install square drains in the tiled area's.
it worked twice so far on the 6 commercial jobs we did this year.
here's another we did a few months ago.
some dont fall in the center of the tile so they are easier.

Thats how i do it also.
I do so many of the same size drains i made a wood template of the drain.
I hate when the drains fall inside the tile. Once, i marked the tile where the drain was. Set the tile. Went back and cut a hole to get the threaded neck into the drain, spun the drain down to the tile and traced the drain cover onto the tile. Then went to work with the grinder.
This method works well cause the porcelin tile was so hard it kept breaking when i would try to cut it. Even when i would use cardboard under the tile while i was grinding it ,it would just crack. I just figured there was a better way.

I usually cut my drains on the tailgate of my truck with a couple old towels under it - usually doesn't break.
I still have to grout this thing - 1/3 brick bond carried over 4 walls and 2 shelves - yes I did cheat - can you find em? I lost 15 pounds on this job - way under bid both time wise and $$ but live and learn I guess

Thanks guys, it will look completely different with white grout - what's your opinion -
I spent so much time putting that puzzle together it's a shame it will be blended in and the glass and slate pencil rail will show all the cuts/miter cuts .

Grout it with "LIPSTICK"from Customs
We've done some pencil liners out of slate but had issues with some showing the "layering" of the slate..didn't look very good on some..I guess it's a matter of choosing the right piece of stone. Did you have any of that with that slate?

Actually Stephen is right on with the two color call..I bet we'd end up doing the same. Have done like a Del Gray on jobs like that..not a bad look..kinda in the middle.

What Pooky said.
The shower I just finished here I did with two colors - bright white and starlight blue (? something like that) specifically for that reason, didn't want the blue to have a white grout line every 13" and in the miters, etc. It was a pita but it ended up with nice clean lines. Worth it in the end, though.
What Trask said, too. I'm slow tonight. Here's a link with more pics of the job: Porcelain bath remodel

yep the slate is what you described - I already put a grout release on it - and I suggested the 2 color but the HO's said white and get it done - please.
Roger - I almost was gunna type and ask why you put a bar light in that shower then chuckled at myself for being so frikkin tired. (the reflection)

2 color grout
what's the trick to keep the dark color from bleeding into the light color grout?

I suggested the Lati. Chestnut Brown grout they are using on the floor - I did some sample boards for them (only with the floor tile) not the white wall tile. Brings the brown off the floor into the shower just like the inserts do.

Top shelf work going on in here. Happy to be a part of it all.

Stephen,
The HO wanted to use all the cut off pieces from trimming the jamb. Think it was 116 cuts. So he started playing with the cuts and came up with what you see. Nice how the Kerdi drain has a bit of play in it so I was able to get full tiles going all the way around.
