My owl box

Well, Kelly (CX) and I were talking about making owl boxes. Surely, if I built one the owls would come. I built it 2 1/2 years ago and put it on a 20 ft pole. I welded a hinge into the pole about 5 ft off the ground so I can pull the box down to clean it out if I want to, or to change occupants if they get behind on rent.

At first the sparrows moved in. Then a squirrel moved them out and called it home for a while. Then last week my wife went out to feed her chickens and happened to look up there to see an owl perched in the doorway. A KFC this close must be nice for Mrs. Owl.

Gettin' her a nice brood patch there, Davy, you aughta see some young later in the month if you can keep that squirrel outa that box.

For sure you should be searching under the box for pellets your grandkids can have lotsa fun taking apart to see what she's been feeding on. Hopefully some squirrel bones in there.

The squirrel came back for a short visit. Went inside for two seconds and came flying out not even stopping at the door. Landed on my shed roof below, prolly an 8 to 10 ft drop. He didn't expect her to be in there. I'm not sure who will win that battle. I guess I need to add a room addition. LOL.

My bedroom is on the other side, Brian. She's a Screech owl, I believe. I haven't heard any hoots, I'm sure they do though.

That's cool Davy, got me thinking of that. We have way too many bats around here, they are always trying to get in the house. Last year I saw an Owl snatch a bat in my driveway, I just learned they eat bats, Maybe I should build me an Owl condo.

Chuck, I can't remember the exact size of my box. I went to owlshack.com and made it similar to theirs. I cant remember where I heard about it but I did cut saw blade slots or grooves horizontally below the entrance to help them climb out.

The roof is a piece of plywood that has 7 or 8 coats of Mercrete on it. I know the weather will eventually tear it up so I better stick a piece of slate on it when I take it down to clean it. Spruce up the place a little.

I don't mind bats when they're outside eating bugs. But when they make their way into my house.....

I don't care for Owls hangin around...Like Brian said they make too much damn noise. When I was little I lived with my grandparents in Basalt Colorado, right out side of Aspen. We had one loud sucker that would scare me to death almost every night. One night I woke up to a 12 ga. blast, I guess that sucker was keeping my Grand dad up late too
