Grounds for Termination
Ive had atleast 2 dozen workers mix in with us over the past couple of years.I see alot of things go on that makes me wonder if some of you have encountered the same.
I have alot of things that either caused,or lead up to termination. Here are some-
1.dissappearing to either text/smoke
2.decide to take a smoke break with other trades
3.showing up late
4.excessive talking
5.knowing when to curse/when not to (H-Os)
These are just a few.
Some of the more comical ones would be-
1.bringing clean grout water with grass in it
2.leaving mortar on trowels after cleaning
3.pushing tile thru the saw until blade stops

In our Right-To-Work state of Texas, you don't need no steenken reason to fire anyone. In fact its best if you give no reason so they can't sure you for the reason given.

I hate when they bring in buckets with grass and mud on the bottom of them.

Oh, oh! I have one!
We employed this guy that would NOT shut up. He talked to me, the dogs, Casper, the walls, random strangers, the clients and if no one else is around, he'd talk to himself. Once on a job site at a (designer) client's house, he even opined on how well things went together and how he could not have chosen better himself - waxing lyrical about how he has an "eye for design" etc.
Anyhow: we came back from camping one Sunday and I put the last few beers in the lunch room fridge. Not totally trusting the noob, I told Casper to check the beers in the fridge occasionally. Monday after work, the guy starts walking back home (no, he did not have a car or a licence...) when he turns around after about 200 yds and walks back to Casper. He asked if he could have a couple beers for the road? Casper says no, of course not. Guy looks totally baffled and asks: "Why not?!", almost like we owed him the beer or something.
Casper told him just to come get his last pay check and not to worry about coming back to work.
I think we dodged a bullet there

I don't hire smokers. End of story. Somehow they all figure that 5 minutes for a smoke does not count as a break.
The way I look at it you can't fire a guy for screwing up. If he's screwing up then you're not managing him properly. For me grounds for dismissal are stealing and lying. To me slacking is the same as stealing. If a helper goofs around on the job then he's taking money from my wallet.

Hmmm~
Arbitrarily "talking down" other trades (unless pressed by the HO...)
Stealing business
Stealing ANYTHING...
Excessive texting
Not being where you should be/doing what you should be doing...
Smoking in a finished house
Drinking/drugs on MY time...
Not following instructions (two chances)
Insubordination

After reading all of these, I have determined that I need to fire myself.
I'm a mess.

Lt, so long as you told these guys what you want and expect, then fair is fair. I hate when a noob talks to the home owners...about anything!

Cell phone usage (texting) is rampant. I see it by employee's of every trade.
Not sure that some of these grounds are reasonable or unreasonable.
Depends on the situation. If you hire a smoker expect them to have to smoke.
It's up to you to inform them of when a good time is or is not..
Layout ground rules for cell phone usage.
if you never tell someone a water pail with mud on it is not good they won't know.
Kids today...I sound like my dad and I am sure my dad before him..
Not everyone has common sense. But some of them can learn.
It's hard to find good workers. you'll have to go through quite a few of them to find good ones. I don't have the patience to teach anymore.
If a good strong hard working kid came up to me and said he wanted to learn a trade I would do it. Not interested in anyone who just wants a job.
Problem is you invest your time in them, you teach them well and they go on their own..
In a nutshell employees are a representative of your company.
Most good companies I have seen have good hardworking reps'.
The others maybe not so much. If you ask me most times they are the mirror image of their leader...

I think I have a solution, LT.
You just need a rotating crew of meth heads. When one's crashing, the other can be high. Productivity will be off the charts!
