Or live to tell about it.
Oh, wait, we don't know that yet.
The AT is wonderful. There are numerous cabins along the trail that you, if inclined, can rent for a small fee through the various clubs that help maintain the trail, the PATC (Potomac Area Trail Club) being just one.

Thanks all. Heh...Greg - yep, not having to work is a good thing. My better half is still working...I mean someone needs to pick up the health insurance.
As for the Trail, I like a challenge and it will be good to break out of my much too sedentary routine. Lots of folks have completed the NOBO (Georgia to Maine) hike. Far fewer (around 2,000) have done it SOBO (Maine to Georgia).
The only bad thing about the hike is that it will really cut into my motorcycle riding next year.

So, you tent camp along the way and pick up provisions as needed? Is the trail somewhere halfway up the mountain? Or is it all over the place with endless elevation changes?

Kurt - Yup, tent camp (plenty of shelters too) along the trail. Resupply in towns along the way, some are right on the trail, others you get to by hitching or grabbing a shuttle into town. I plan on staying on the trail as much as possible to stay focused on getting it done.
A lot of elevation changes! A little over 400,000 feet of ups and downs!

I have been on the AT since June 20. The hike is going well, I have finished Maine (282 miles) and NH (175 miles). I'm home for a couple of days but will head back out on Sunday. If you are interested in following my Appalachian Trail journey click on this link to join my Facebook private group (link expires in 48 hours): https://fb.me/g/p_P6c3ojgU1TufBYUf/fWkAZ2GA
And here are a couple of photos from my first 450 miles on trail...

Well, I am getting older so gray hair I guess.
The owl - I encountered him on the trail just a couple of days ago. Was walking up a hill and he was perched on a rock right on the trail. I walked up slowly and about 10 feet away he flew up to the tree branch. Kept a careful watch on me as I passed by. Looks like a Barred Owl. There was another one nearby but I only saw it briefly.

Long walk to find only a single pair of owls, seems to me, Joe.
I know the Barred Owls are spreading like wildfire, but I was not aware they were in your part of the country. This time of year, if you'd looked around a bit you might have found a couple young-of-the-year. You were carrying some live mice just in case, right?

Awesome pics Joe, and your muzzle's got nuthin' on mine. Mine's not even gray, just pure white. We have a lot of Barred Owls here in NE Ohio, I love their call.
