Kitchen Backsplash Project

I am preparing to tile my backsplash.
I have selected a 3x3 porcelain tile that is 1/4" thick.

I have done a couple tile projects in the past (sunroom floor and bathtub surround).

I have a couple questions before I get started:

1. My first question is regarding a window. I am going to tile the sill, but I only have 3/8" clarence from the top of the existing (painted sheetrock) sill and the bottom of the window. Is this going to work? The window overhangs the sill about 3/16", so in order to tile the entire sill, I need to fit under the window.

2. Should I use Mastic or Thinset? What is the difference?

3. What size trowel? I was thinking 3/16 V Notch.

Thanks for your suggestions/guidance.

I wouldnt tile the sill. Way too much movement...

For a kitchen backsplash with porcelain you can use either mastic or thinset.

how big are the voids on the backs of your tiles? This will help in determining what size notch trowel to use.
