317/333 Under DitraHeat

Hi all,

Working on another renovation. I have two bathrooms to tile and have run into a question. I picked up some 317 today for the DitraHeat membrane to go down over plywood underlayment. I have used both Ditraset and Custom's Uncoupling Mat Mortar in the past, but neither are currently available near me. I like Laticrete products, so didn't even think about it when the DalTile guys wrote up the ticket. Now I see that Laticrete wants 333 for installations over plywood and when using porcelain tile.

I thought this was a no-no with Schulter?

What's the word from the experts?

Thanks.

317 is good for installing tile over Ditra as it's an ANSI A118.1 dryset mortar when mixed with water. For installing the Ditra over plywood, you need an ANSI A118.11 modified mortar, and mixing the 317 with 333 will do it.

I'd use the 317 over the Ditra, but would just get a locally available bag of ANSI A118.11 instead of the 333 for under the Ditra. If you can get Laticrete, just get a bag of 252 or 253.

In that case, is 252 superior to VersaBond?

They're comparable. 253 is superior to both. Either will do just fine.
