Those of us in the know like CX and Bubba know that you can pretty much drill anywhere you want if your substrate is solid. CX raises the point that you can't "float" the installation with thinset. The substrate should have been rock solid first, plumb, flat, n all, then tiled. Basics 101.............

FWIW, they call thinset THINset for a reason. When it is installed thicker than it is designed for, it tends to shrink and crack. That can add to the long-term problems.
