Thanks
Yep, subway in 2 bathrooms, this one was plain, other just had a band with chair-rail capping a wainscott. Other floor was black n white. this is the kids bathroom. Nicest couple, even offered us waffles and brownies for working on memorial day.
The pattern was a complete surprise. Homeowners mentioned it after I'd already given a bid to the gc. Couple hours added for the pattern, but came out nice. All Spectralock.

This was a stone mudjob tear out with porcelain replacement. In order for the base and closets and doors and appliances to work i had to build it back up.I wanted the tile to slip under the base so i ran screeds to keep it right, and yes the slab was pretty bad, some areas have 3/8 mud others over 1",It was about 250 ft.i was done at 3:00 by myself.Boy you guys are tough.I've used almost 5000 lbs of sand so far.

Chad,
I had a helper he mixed 6 full mixes I helped when I could almost 2 tons of sand, I already had the job tarpapered and wired so all we had to do was gauge the floor.

I'm using a barrel mixer i bought from HD,called Big Red,it's mediocre at best.I honestly thought five years ago my mud pullin days were over, i was doin resto work, but with the recession i've had to get back into remodeling.
I haven't used a tiller in 20 years,it would tear up todays membranes and garage floors.I'll tell you what is nice though i have one of those little infrared push button start devices i plug the mixer into and just push the button and it turns on or off.

We usually use the tiller outdoors on plywood but when we can't do that I use a mortar mixer like you use that barrel mixer. It's slower but once a helper gets the hang of it he can churn it out.

Donnie,
Nope I use a blue mixing box and a hoe, I can chop a mix in about 3-5 minutes with a helper. I was mudding a floor this weekend and an old timer saw the mixing box came over told me how he used to be a tile setter and how they used l&m to set the tile. He said no metal straight edges were used, he told me he had a mixer electic he would give me. I forgot to grab it. He was amazed that I knew how to mud a floor.

Hats off to you Rick that's a lot of mixing by hand. Was the "oldtimer" referring to l&m unsanded thinset? Great product for setting tile on fresh mud and wet setting.

l&m is pretty much pure portland from what I was told. He was annoying too. He told me I pulled mud fast 290 ft in 4 hours.
Donnie I am 26 though.

26 huh. I don't even remember what 26 feels like. But trust me one morning you'll wake up and wish you'd used that tiller sooner.
All us old farts are annoying but you can help me anytime with mud. If you pull that mud too fast the HO doesn't want to pay you what it's worth. I can just hear 'em now "it only took you 4 hours and you're charging me this!"

Rick why don't you spread all the dry mix out on the floor and hose it down ?
