Niches

Aloha Everyone,

I'm considering installing a "niche" in my next shower tile project. According to the Liberry, "Once the niche is installed with adhesive and/or screws, the wallboard can then be fit around the niche frame. That juncture is then sealed (waterproofed).
My question is, what is the preferred method of sealing (waterproofing) the juncture? Do I overlap the edges with PVC pan liner material or can I just goop the heck out of it with Silicone caulking and call it good?

If I decide to build a niche instead of going the pre-fab route, what is the procedure for this?

I use caulk - after all it is then covered with tile. I have done them without the prefab. use 2x4s and CBU and caulk and thin set the seams - the unit never gets hits with constant water so its ok - pros will be along

Tom is on track so long as the niche is out of the general shower spray. If it's going to constantly get wet, use a surface waterproofer such as Laticrete Watertite (Lowes).

That's a nice shelf John. H, I'm into over kill on anyhting that has potiental to collect water. I really like membrane and mud in there, it's surprisingly hard to mud that small an area. I also use cbu under ditra/kerdi mat overcbu up the wall.Under cbu is usually tar paper wrapped like you flash a window, so everything drips down shiplap.

Maybye all this loses me time on my shower installs, but I have a progressive long term mindset to showers. They cost too much to fix a year later. Dollar for dollar it's potientally the most expenseive fix in the house, so why noy proceed with some degree of caution.

Whadayamean, nice shelf? Those are great shelves.

Everything is mud exept the lid and the back, which are backer board. It resides on the wall opposite the shower head and recieves a fine mist if anything at all. There is no need to waterproof it. It will last forever.

When I did my shower, someone had posted a link to a site that sells a product called the yellow duk. It's a preformed plastic niche that is inset into the cbu and can be tiled over. I put one in that is 14x14 and it turned out great, and it only cost about $30. The company is local here in San Diego, but I can't seem to remember the actual company name. Maybe someone else will remember and post it for me.
