Curbless Shower?

I'm new here but looked around quite a bit and I'm impressed with the information available; should be a staple bookmark for me.

My question of the day concerns my basement bathroom remodel (first phase of second story addition)

It's on a slab floor (already broken out to rearrange the soil stack). My question is: when I put the slab back can I facilitate a curb-less shower pan design? I wouldn't mind a small step down into the shower but I'd love to not have a protruding curb anywhere.

thanks in advance
Paul

Sure, you can recess it.Look through the Kerdi threads,is one option, then check out the pan threads to get familiar with the procedure of installing shower pans.

Dave,

I have and I did but I was hoping for some details:
-is a curb of some sort required by code (Generally; I know this is locally specific)
- should the slope be built into the slab?
- would there be a benefit to the Kerdi system in this instance?

Generally when we do a recessed slab sort of handicap shower we give a slight roll to the pan instead of a curb, so there is some height there. You can also make a step down roman tub.The trouble with most recessed and curbless showers is the pan, verses roll on waterproofing methods. You see it would be easy if you could just replace the pan with a roll on, but the roll ons, don't want to stick to the drain so you have a leak area. The Kerdi system has it's own drain, and pan junction..no leaks.I personally don't use the system, but it could be your answer, check into the Schluter site, or around this site there's an explanation of it.

Kerdi is a good idea for your project, but I'd recess the slab just enough to support a mortar bed (1-1/2" or 2") and then whatever drop you desire added to the depth. Build your mortar bed with the slope you want and then waterproof with Kerdi. Consider using the Kerdi drain with the membrane because although you can seal around a conventional drain .... it's a pain in the butt.
