Handicapped Accessible Shower for a fellow Veteran this week. Had a lot of help on this one from a lot of generous people who stepped up to get this ready for tile. We used tile sitting around in my garage, leftover from other jobs. Before and after, old farmhouse footprint of room obviously had to be changed

Thanks yes I agree we owe our vets and this was one way for me to help one family though they are everywhere in every community struggling. The VA will give you a specific amount for this project.

We were originally going to do the whole shower in fiberglass vs tile. The vet's wife really wanted some tile on the walls she has been to my Mom's and loves her tile! Couldn't drop the floor enough to do a barrier free so she went with a pan which will allow for wheelchair access. Don't know the exact brand she got it through Lowes. People from church and relatives all chipped in and got that all ready. We did the Wedi board, tile and 48" niche with 4 shelves, plus planks with NuHeat in Ditra Heat Mat for main source of heat. I had all the tile leftover from jobs. Used SpectraLock grout and Schluter Rondec profiles.

8 unit apartment complex. New build. Every room gets tile except the bedrooms.
8"x 48" wood look plank. Apartments range from 900-1400 sq ft of tile
Just another day at the office!

Beautiful job Craig
Not the most appealing tile though.

Bet you didn't tell that to the owner, Craig.

Way to go, Jon. I'm a vet. Come and build me a shower or something.

Seriously, way to go.

Just recently did an 8x48 plank floor. They can be a real pain. The tiles i worked with were actually warped a bit from corner to opposite corner (think of actually twisting the tile). Drove me crazy until i realized what was wrong with them (i thought i was doing something wrong). Craig how much more do you typically charge for such long planks over your standard tile rate?

I don't have a "rate" per say. I figure on how long the job will take, how much I need to make per day, add a percentage for fixed business costs and add a cushion of a few points.

Doing the plank on a random pattern actually took less time than doing the 1/3 offset. Just square up the room, snap a control line , pick a wall and go. What you cut off at the far wall, use on the next run.No making sure joints lined up to the offset or adjusting the layout for small cuts at doorways ect....

Originally we were going to do the 1/3 offset with such long plank. After taking samples out of various boxes and checking for flatness we were confident we could do a random pattern without any lippage. Brand new build and a 10' straight edge confirmed we had a flat substrate.

I know I have said it on posts before but figuring the job on a $$$ per sq foot price is shorting yourself as a installer in the long run.

But to put in perspective, I would say normally a plank job with 1/3 offset takes probably 10-15% longer. So if I was pricing per sq foot I would add that as a up charge. No different than say up charging for a diagonal layout.

Your time is money. Don't give away either.

Splash before cabinet and top? I'm curious to see in a few weeks if my math is good.
