I looked at this small job last week and told them that i would install on a time and materials bid. They agreed, so I started looking into the Laticrete MVIS mortar. After a call to Jim Partridge, our local Laticrete rep, he spotted me a bag if I would send him some pictures and give him my opinion of the mortar. So, I decided to give it a side by side comparison. I installed the bottom part of the hearth with regular modified thinset and all the top with the MVIS mortar. The MVIS performed excellent. I followed the instructions on the Laticrete website. Once the veneer was set for about 5 minutes, it took quite a bit of effort to remove it. I did use a temporary support for the stone above the fire place but removed it after 15 minutes and the veneer felt very solid. The thinset did not perform the same and some of the veneer actually slumped. I would definatly use the MVIS again and recommend it for veneer stone jobs.

Looks good Juan, do you mind sharing what thinset you used to compare with the Latcrete MVIS?

You're right, just gotta make it through the parade and then it can tent...lol 1/8" gap all around the perimeter so it just might survive

Isaac,
I had some Ultraflex 2 left over from another job so that's what I used. Not that I want to talk smack about Mapei products, I think just about any regular thinset would have slumped with the veneer stone.
I've done other veneer stone jobs and always used a traditional method - lath, scratch coat, and Type S mortar. For a small one day job like this one, this system was the way to go. IMO, the time saved in labor for a traditional method would far outweigh the cost of the MVIS.

That floor came out really nice Jon
And that fireplace is awesome Juan! I've passed on a few veneer jobs cause I dont want to have to deal with it, maybe I'll give it a go with that mvis.
I'm back to the job I floated a week or two ago. Hydroban went on and commenced to stack the 20"X40"X3/16" Lea porcelain sheets. Pretty cool that Laticrete already has a warranty for this specific type of thin tile .
Used my new 26" RTC razor push cutter and man that thing is awesome! set up my tilematic and didnt use it once! I'll post some pics in the other thread soon.
The owner is an architect and he has calculated that the water will not get on his cabinets on the back wall of the shower. His wife is betting against that calculation. I just smile and keep stackin Kind of a trip he prints out all the layouts he wants in a CAD drawing.
The floor is half inch thick 16"X16" limestone which worked well with the laticrete drain.

Rod, nice use of what you had. Your creativity is always impressive. The high dollar designer isn't happy because she didn't think of it.
Jon, sharp looking floor, looks like it was there all the time.
Brian, more good looking showers.
This is a no curb shower in Cordova, TN. The joys of bullnose that doesn't match the tile is quite evident in these pics.
