Here in Washington I have to pay the workmens comp based on the hours worked by employees. It is $3.0745 per hour. The employee pays .4454 of that. My nut $2.63 hr. Here we have a program with the National builders Association where you can join and they group like company's and if you have a good record (few claims) you get a pay back. I think last year we got something like $1200.00 back.

Here in IL, Sole Proprietors and Officers can opt out by completeing the appropriate paperwork with your insurance agent. As Kurt says, you can carry a minimum policy. Here it's running about $800 annually. I carry a policy here in IL and WI, because WI won't honor my IL policy (thats legally valid in WI). It's just more political red tape of who gets your dough!

No contractor here will mess with you without it...most go through payroll co. to get it cheaply. It's true an officer of the co. doesn't have to cover himself..but just go try to get anyones work without it.Payroll co. go about 241/2% of payroll here, but it's much better than dealing with ins. co. and coming up with a down payment, and going through a workers comp. audit..yeah, didn't know about that, did ya, they actually come check your books to see if you're paying the right amount...ya better have good books too. It's a wonder any of us survive..especially at these prices, and illegal competition.
