New Windows

I have a few questions on replacing windows. The outside of the old windows have wood brickmould butted up to 8" aluminum siding. I ordered the new window (I'm starting out with just one for now), without trim and am going to use a 6" AZEK board to trim a frame around it. Obviously, I'll need to cut the siding to allow for the wider trim. So do I nail the window in place, tape over the nailers and piece in the trim boards and cualk all the joints? How tight should the trim be between the window and siding? The new windows are Andersen 100 Series.

You do understand we're a ceramic and stone tile site, yes?

I'd need a good deal more information about the construction of your house to properly answer your question, but the instructions that came with your window should give you a good idea how it is to be installed and properly flashed.

In general, aluminum siding is not caulked at all in my neck of the woods. It's generally trimmed against whatever other material it abuts.

My opinion; worth price charged.

Yes, I know this is a tile site, but I'm too lazy to join a new forum. This window replacement is part of a chain of events that lead to my master bath remodel. I'm sure there's plenty of expertise here to help me out.
Everything gets caulked in Wisconsin.

Hi Scott,

I would slice through the caulking (siding/brick molding) joint, and remove the molding. The will expose the nails in the window flange. Maybe you can remove the window without destroying the paper-like flashing. That would be good.

I would then install the new window and cut my trim to fit against the siding. I would not cut the siding back simply to make room for new trim.

You might find it less of a headache to simply remove the siding all together, install the new window and trim, then reinstall and clauk the siding.

I had a similar situation when I installed 3 new windows that didn't previously exist, and moved the door. Was far easier to remove the aluminum siding, do the framing and unit install, then put the siding back up than it would have been to cut the siding exactly to the correct width while in place.

Removing the siding will ensure you can attach the window correctly, as well as flash it correctly.
