At a local AT&T store:
"How about you start setting tile at that end of the room, I'll start at this end, and we'll meet up in the middle. What could go wrong?"
I found about ten of these in the room.
And around the column

I couldn't get over all these little 1/2 inch dutchmans everywhere. And right out in the middle of the floor. I know there's no ideal solution for that, but I'd rather cheat a 1/16" of the last four tiles to try and make it up than to put a shorty in the middle of the floor.

I've never understood why standards for commercial work are so low.

I don't know, Jim. I heard that term years ago, probably here.
I've seen a lot of the same mistakes on different jobs, even dutchmans like that.
But this one was a first.

Did they make you buy a new phone before allowing you to take all those pictures?

No, I'm not on AT&T, just went there with a friend who was buying some things. I noticed the floor when I tripped over some lippage.

My brother taught me about dutchmen, and he started back in the fifties.

There is a little history to it Jim. My guess is that it started after a few drinks in a bar somewhere irrelevant, but greatly significant, as you have now revealed.

I used to work with a guy that we called "Dutchman Don".
He wasn't Dutch but he earned his nickname.

I didn't know that it emanated from carpentry, and that's interesting. I haven't used a "dutchman" in years and remember doing it mostly when 4-1/4 tiles were the norm and tiles saws were not.
I used them mainly on kitchen splashes when trying to center the field under the sink window. Sometimes centering would leave something ugly. A dutchman would cure it and would mostly hide behind the faucet.
