Natural stone on Fireplace and hearth stone setting?

Ok I have framed up to install a direct vent gas FP in a corner. The hearth support is made with 2x6" and 3/4" plwood decking. to this I am thinking of just setting my 2 1/4" thick red flagstone chunks with specmix? they will weight about 100#'s plus each and 2-3 chunks about 30x16".
Then up the vertical side surfaces and above the fireplace I was going to use expanded metal over my 1/2" plywood and the 1/2" cement board that comes surrounding the FP. IT is a Vantana unit http://www.valorfireplaces.com/produ...x.php?page=386 and comes with this rather large no framing area and the cement board above is really unsupported. I could use 1/2" cement board instead of plywood over my framing if that would be better? I have done about 7 tons of stone to block and cement walls using ties and nails and wires with the block and expanded metal lathe anchored to cement walls and so far several years and no stones falling off.
I have some stones that will span the FP opening and sit on the side stack of stones.

Any help and or links would be appreciated.

Is this even the right place for a natural stone thread?
Maybe I should use a good modified thinset that adheres to plywood like ultraflex II

Good questions. Better advice could be offered regarding the unsuppported area over the fireplace if you included a picture or two of what was done.
