Cheapest gas in these parts is $2.71/gal this morning. Cash only!

The article Dan posted was really good. Makes me feel a little better that gas costs as a % of real income is actually lower than it was 20 years ago. 'Course back then, I was a new driver and that was one of my ONLY expenses...

When I went to the CTEF in late 2005, Robert, South Carolina had the lowest gasoline prices I saw from South Texas to Pendleton, SC.

And back.

O.K., this has to be an all time HIGH for gas prices! I rented a car in Melbourne and returned it at the Orlando airport yesterday. The gas station across the street from the Thrifty Car rental was $4.39 for REGULAR! I commented to the guy on the bus to the airport and he said he stops at the 7-11 at 8338 Narcoosee Rd. two exits east of the airport exit. I think he said he paid $2.79. I know you pay for convenience but I think $1.60/gallon is a jacking, not a convenience. Luckily, it was only 3 gallons. Had I more time, I would have gone hunting for a cheaper price. So anyone returning a car to Orlando airport area get your gas before you get to Semoran Blvd.

Kate,

Those are 1987 prices not 2007 prices!

For one thing, ethanol - in its current state - is anything but the road to energy independence. Sure it can help out, but even if we were to convert 100% of available corn crops to ethanol production, our gasoline dependence would drop a mere 12%
Quote:
Because the U.S. government required oil refineries to use more than 4 billion gallons of ethanol last year - regardless of how much it actually cost - wholesale prices were more than double the cost of conventional gasoline. And that doesn’t even include the costs of delivering the ethanol, which boosted its "real" price even more.

That leads us to gasoline prices at the pump, which include federally mandated subsidy taxes in designated "clean air" areas that boost the price by 60 cents or more per gallon.
I wish this guy would cite his sources.

The correct place for corn is your stomach, not your gas tank..

Argh - most gas around here is about $3.49/gal for regular. I was able to go to my "cheap" gas station and got it for $3.31 last week.

But I'm luckier than most - I have just under 10 miles each way to work and a tank lasts about two weeks.

Crude is sky high. I would still blame escalating gasoline prices on the futures market, but Dan (ddmoit) would lecture me again.

What gets me is they usually don't pull this stuff until summer. $2.89 here in Houston.

And California is always higher. You folks tax yourselves to death over there, and I help you out by pulling my travel trailer the length of the state each summer.
