Resin-backed Marble

Looking through the instructions for Versabond, I noted that it said that it
should not be used for resin-backed marble. The marble tile that I have (12x12 Giallo Riale) has a fiberglass mesh in the back --- does that mean
that it is resin-backed? Is there an easy way of determining if it is so?

I suppose I should use an epoxy-based mortar if it is resin-backed? I am planning to tile the fireplace surround and hearth with it (light use).

Thanks
Mukund

Hi Mukund, Welcome aboard.

I'm not sure what type of mortar to recommend. You can contact Custom Building Products support at: http://custombuildingproducts.com/Su...er=diy&lang=en

Not sure what their weekend hours are.

Mark Longfellow, Custom's marketing manager, is a member of our crew. I'll alert him to this thread.

Mukund;

It's likely that your marble is resin backed. If I remember Giallo Riale, it's a lot like the "Brechia" family of stones from Italy that require a fiberglass backing adhered to the stone with resin to prevent the stone from cracking during otherwise normal handling. Not much will stick to these tiles other than a product like this:

Although pricey, this product will work very well. Let me know if you'd like more info, or need help locating a distributor that carries this product.
