Sorry David, I'm with John on the thickness issue.1" is an absolute minimum in my book.

By the way, no architect has ever spec'd any mud shower base under 2 full inches on all the blueprints and details ive ever gone through.
Of course none have ever specified Kerdi either so i'll concede that point before you beat me over the head with it

OK, I give up. What is the black thing that is shown in all the Kerdi product literature ?

It looks like it is embedded in thinset where a wall and floor join.

Is it something that is needed ? Or related to one of the profile products like Rodec, and not really anything to do with a Kerdi shower ?

Kirk, Do you mean the black thing as in the attached picture? I believe that is a piece of Schlüter®-DILEX-EKE shown.

Here's the blurb on what it is supposed to do:

Schlüter®-DILEX-EKE is a corner movement profile that effectively absorbs movements at inside wall corners and floor/wall transitions in ceramic tile surfaces. The width of the visible movement zone is 3/16" (5 mm), creating a discrete, uniform joint. Schlüter®-DILEX-EKE prevents surface water penetration and features a tile pocket that hides cut tile edges. In addition, it prevents sound bridges, making it ideal for floor/wall transitions in sound-rated floors. For floor/wall transitions where large movements are anticipated, use Schlüter®-DILEX-EK.

Yep, that's the sucker all right.

I thought it might be attached to the visible strip running off to the right, but I wasn't sure. I thought it might be some special tool that they just didn't mention in the video for Kerdi.

So the bottom line is that it doesn't "really" belong in pictures of Kerdi membrane. It is one of their edging or profile pieces. Plastic stuff to make your nice tile job look like maybe it isn't a real tile job. At least that's what I think of when I see it in their pictures. IMHO.

I always recommend using 1" of mud on open areas (and I remember a few of you have admitted using less than that), but we're talking about a shower floor here. Any travel that might occur is suppressed by the walls and compression really isn't an issue... the less mud that's there, the harder it'll be to compress.

Pretty close, JB. We threw in a little extra so that Mac could play around with the stuff or waterproof a little area outside the shower. He did say that sometimes he splashes a bit outside the enclosure.

Lucky guy... he'll have it for the weekend.
