Threshold question

I am replacing some tile that was installed 32 years ago. Whoever installed it stopped the tile right at the yellow line in the picture below. When I tile a room I like to take it to the red line in the photo.

I was planning to pull back the carpet and extend the plywood further into the threshold and lay the tile to the red line.

Is my thinking correct or am I being to annal?

You are right on Harold! You have two options for the width of the threshold.

1. Cut your threshold to width to hit the red line to marked to the yellow line you marked edge of the wall. That will give you a clean edge for your floor tile termination.

2. Or cut a narrow threshold the thickness of the door and bring your tile into the doorway. (my preferred approach)

Where does the door close, on the yellow line or to the left of the red line? Why do you need a threshold? Your tile is supposed to fall in the middle of where the door shuts so when you close the door you see tile from one side and tile from the other.

Door opens and shuts on the yellow line side and stops at the blue line. No I don’t need a threshold just wondering how far to bring the tiles into the doorway.

Should I stop just where the door stops on the blue line or between the blue and red line which is the middle?

Sorry, based on your thread title, I assumed you wanted to put in a threshold.

As smifwal said, typically (best practice), the transition occurs under the door. We can’t see if this is hinged or pocket door so only you know where that line is.

Sounds like good plan. Don’t forget to undercut door jamb on the side so you can slips tiles under frame.

. I measure from the stop to the edge of the jamb and split the difference. So that would be in the middle of the yellow and blue line.
