tile over painted surface

I set several tiles on the end of my vanity. The surface is smooth and painted, probably with a laquer finish. I ran out of Versabond thinset and used Quikcrete thinset, without any additives (only water). Several days later, I was using a screwdriver to knock off some excess thinset from the edge of one of the tiles and accidently caused the tile to pop off.

What is the correct adhesive to use when setting tile on smooth, painted wood? Would the Versabond have adhered better than un-fortified Quikcrete thinset? Should I have used a mastic?

I'm going to pop off the 3 remaining tiles today and reset....any advice on what to use?

Thanks,
Scotty

Hi Scotty. It's looking pretty thin around here today. I know that can be painful when you're itching to move on something. Hang tight, the boys'll be back.

Hi Scotty, I would sand the paint good first. I know versabond will stick better than quikcrete thinset. I would use liquid nails before mastic.
