While federal taxes on gasoline are the same everywhere, that's not true about state gasoline and sales taxes...that can make a fairly significant difference in the price of fuel. But, transportation costs to get it to the pump are a big part of it too...

Diesel, per gallon, compared to pure gasoline, has more energy, and even a larger amount if the gasoline is 'polluted' with ethanol...so, in a way, it should cost more per gallon.

Years ago, diesel used to be exactly on par with “regular” unleaded. Did something change to cause a price shift?
Our less than a buck/gallon for unleaded has risen to $1.95 now that the lockdown is lifting.

Costco Honolulu $2.25, which is the lowest in a while. Out my way $3-3.40. It'll probably start creeping up again as things open up more. With my 30+ gal tank it's worth driving into town every week. Costco is also across from Home Depot, so there's that too. :-)
To bring down diesel prices, stop makin diesel trucks.

One of the hassles with diesel, is that it is essentially refined the same as fuel oil people use to heat their homes. A refinery setup for say gasoline wouldn't be the same as one for diesel, although they can coexist. So, in the winter, the supply can be stressed, and the price goes up. In the summer, it can be less expensive until fall when homeowners (and businesses that use it) start to fill their tanks back up again for the coming cold season. That's more of an issue in the more northern states, partly because of transportation...more of the refineries are towards the south of the country, but not all. Diesel has about 113% of the energy of the same volume of gasoline, which is one reason why it can get better mpg; another is that they are much more efficient while idling than a gasoline engine. Compression losses eat up some of that. https://afdc.energy.gov/fuels/fuel_comparison_chart.pdf

Off the diesel topic a bit, but 2 weeks or so ago; I filled up with regular gas at $1.44. Haven’t even used 1/2 of it yet due to stay/work at home. Was out and about today and gas was up to around $1.75 most every place I passed.
How quick things change.

Just supply and demand at work...as states decide to open, people will be driving more, the demand rises, and the price can go up as people 'need' it rather than just want it.

A few weeks ago....for like one day...diesel was cheaper at $1.79 than unleaded at 1.89. It’s been a looooong time since that happened.

Dang!
Over here in Texas, gas is a pleasant $1.38, give or take. I remember gas reaching almost $4 during the recession but it's been a while since I've seen prices that high. Sorry for you guys out on the west coast, yikes

I saw a photo online somewhere of a gasoline station neon sign indicating regular grade for only $4.85 somewhere in sunny California, Goldstein. Perhaps you should be happy you're living up in the frozen tundra where gas is cheap, eh?
Here in South Texas we're running in the neighborhood of $2.80 last time I made a purchase.
