Drywall bits vs #2 phillips

Anyone know the reasoning behind using a true drywall phillips bit vs a regular #2 phillips?
I am not talking about a bit with a dimpler built in. I am talking about the skinny #2 phillips. Different brands label them differently. Bosch calls them p2r. Home depot doesn't sell them in store separately. And most likely the employees never knew that there is a difference. I am sure that some of you didn't know that there are different bits.

Anyone know that said bit does or doesn't do?
Here is a pic of a drywall bit. It's the one in the middle. It's in a 2 inch extension.
Btw, the bosch dimpler is a pos.

May be the way it fits into one of those palm screw guns they use.

This is just a guess but I'm wondering if the drywall screw heads are shallower?

Wood screws may have more of a cone shape and room for a deeper indent. Drywall screws may be flatter for more grabbing power and therefore shallower?

I'll take a better look at my screws today. Never really thought about this before.

Now, I am looking at your photo correctly, there are three different bits there, right? The two on the left, the narrower middle one and the long one on the right.

The left and the right ones do not actually use the same phillips design. The ones one the left appear to be Phillips II Plus given the leaf-like shape that first opens up slightly before converging into a point. They also differ in terms of what is referred to as a flex core. The larger that yellow band around the bit, the more the bits are able to flex to prevent breaking when driving into tough materials.

The one in the center however is not actually a Phillips #2 from what I can see in the picture, but if my memory serves me right is something called either a Frearson or a prince drive. They differ slightly from a standard phillips by having slightly curved V cutouts in the bits. Frearson screws allow for a deeper insertion of frearson bits in comparison to standard Phillips and because of that are more common in industrial and marine applications.



There are some other ones that can be easily mistaken for a phillips, and ironically are even sold as phillips #2, and unless someone has the appropriate bits also available they might never realize the difference.

I don't have "the" answer, but I just hung some drywall yesterday and the bits that came in my drywall screw tubs were labelled PR2 vs the "regular" dewalt bits that are labelled PH2 or just P2.

Given your post I thought "Hm I should check this out" and the PR2's definitely fit more snugly into the drywall screws. Granted, that PR2 bit came in the box of screws, but still...

The bits I had in the drywall gun and in the bag I keep it in were a mix of PH2 and P2's, so I ditched them for the PR2.

the p2r fits into some screws recess better and cams out less. this is also why you break these bits more often.
