Tile over plaster walls

I am redoing my bathroom, and am replacing the old shower tile with new mosaic porcelain tiles, when I removed the old ceramic tiles the thin coat on two of the walls was cracked and in bad shape. I removed the old thin coat mortar and patched the base coat (base coat is mesh wire over wood studs cir 1958).
My question is: What do I need to do to prep the old plaster for the new thin coat/ tiles?
The old plaster looks like it has some kind of moisture barrier between the plaster and thin coat, it is a dark yellow/brown thin painted coat. Can I just smooth out the old base coat, and roll on a new moisture barrier, then put the tile up using a cement based thin set mortar.
I am not sure that the thin set will stick to the moisture barrier.

Hi JB, welcome! You will need a waterproofing membrane or a roll on membrane on the walls. You should remove the plaster area around the shower and put up CBU with a vapor barrier or dry wall with Kerdi.

Thanks Mike, That sounds like the best plan. The CBU with a
moisture barrier will be much easier to work with anyway.
