fireplace surround - brick

I am converting a masonary fp into a gas fp using a gas insert. it currently has a 5' wide raised brick hearth that I need to extend to >6'. How can I add 6" to 9" to each side of the 5' brick hearth?

More brick? Or frame it out as if it were a small wall.
