I'm not sure what the other CBU manufacturers recommend but Hardi says to use thinset or mastic under the backerboard for countertops.

Nothing wrong with mud, I've mudded my countertops for years.

This thread is in the Tile Forum/Advice Board, otherwise known as the Shallow End. If you are going to provide advice here keep it to industry standard solid advice. We are here to help folks not confuse and muddy the issues. You want to do that take it over to the Pro Hangout or Mud box where you can argue all day.

Now Evert, if you haven't been scared off by some of these guys, come back and we'll try to get you back on track. If it were me, I would put down 3/4" ply followed by Ditra and then your granite tiles. I just did a similar counter except I used marble 12x12 tiles. Link is in my sig if you want to take a look.

I've personally never done a tile countertop over anything but mud. It's a most excellent method for making the top flat and level and exactly the desired height for the tile to fit the desired trim, specially if it's wood trim.

My opinion; worth price charged.

I am also finishing off my tiled countertop. I installed 3/4 bc sanded (face up) plywood w/ 1 x 2's furring to bring the height up. After that, i installed ditra using versabond for the top and bottom. One thing i can suggest is to make sure you face the factory edge to the front & use ditra for peace of mind. This will make the install much easier
