Purchasing a shower control v. a tub/shower control? does it matter?

I need a shower valve only. Does it matter if I buy the one that is a tub/shower or do I have to buy a shower only valve. I ask this because I want a particular color. there are shower/tub controls in the color I want but not shower only valves. Can you convert the shower/tub to a shower only by closing off the outlet at the control for the tub spout? thanks,

Depending on the brand, many of them use the same valve and sell the trim pieces separately. I don't think it will matter though, if you cap one outlet.
