The Kerdi Shower Book

Excuse me if I'm posting in the wrong place but here goes:

I already have the drain roughed-in and the plywood subfloor in place AND NOW I Discover this Kerdi system! I downloaded my ebook last night, but does anyone know If it's too late for me to customize and/or use some parts of this great-sounding system without tearing up the sub-floor and cutting joists?
Also- I'd love a walk-in shower, but the hot mop guys all seem to want a 3in. curb for testing purposes. Does it really have to be that high? (I do have an extra 2 inches clearance above the subfloor to the bottom of the pocket door.)

I'm in the S.F. area, won't be having an inspection, and my shower is 6'5" long and can be up to 4'. wide, with walls (open to studs) on 3 sides.

You should start a regular thread on your project so we can all keep up with you as you progress. I just say that no, it's not too late.

Well, first of all, I am VERY excited about the Kerdi system. I can’t wait to try it out. But I am still unclear on a few issues.

It looks like the Kerdi system is applied directly over regular drywall (Sheetrock, Wallboard, Gypsum, etc.). This makes me ask a few questions…

1) Is regular ½” drywall strong enough? (It’s not as hard as say Cement BackerBoard.)

2) Would green (moisture resistant) drywall be okay to use? (Would the moisture resistant properties cause the thin set not to adhere?) (Green drywall may be code for all bathrooms in my area.)

If this is not the same shower from 2004, start a new thread for this project. We'll find you there.

If it is the same shower, you can just add on to that thread if you like.

Regular sheetrock is preferred, MD board (greenrock) is OK, too.

Just a quick question, I already have the TYW book which I noticed had some info on the Kerdi system. Is the Kerdi Shower book the same info, or does it go into alot more detail. Also is there a place where I can watch the Kerdi video before I order all my supplies?

This is the first of probably many questions as I start preparing for this job while convincing my wife I can do it...

There is lots of installation specific information in the Kerdi e-book. You will want it. Click on the Schluter link on the right and contact someone in Customer Service for your region and they will get you the CD to watch.
Between the CD and John's book you will be all set.
When you get ready to start please start a new thread and keeping all of the posts there we can follow along on your project.

The video is on Schluter's web site, I believe. I don't know zackly how to find it there, though. Bet you can track it down, though.

Start a thread for your project before you get to any more questions. This is not a good place for'em.

My associates have already answered the questions, but I just love talking about the Kerdi method.

I wrote the ebook because I felt that I had not done the method justice in Tile Your World. I left many questions unanswered (and that is usually the case in a printed book. You can't anticipate all the questions). The ebook is wonderful because it can be amended and corrected as time goes by. We haven't edited the book yet, but when we do it will be available once more to everyone who has purchased it. In the meantime, there have been updates posted on the special web page that purchasers are privy to. I can guarantee you that, while nothing is ever perfect, The Kerdi Shower Book is the most complete reference available to anyone wishing to build and tile a waterproof and mold-free shower using that method.

P.S. For novice shower builders Tile Your World is still the best all-around book to have because is takes you back to the basics, and The Kerdi Shower Book doesn't do that. It assumes you already know how to build a ceramic tile shower. So, clever person that I am, I've arranged it so that newbies still have to buy both books.

Great idea, Dan. I've already had it, though. We'll be producing videos in the next few months. Hope to have something ready to go by the first of the year.

CX will probably be editing as he always does. He's a nit picker. Does a really great job. Few people know he can actually converse in English and is a stickler at grammar.

I have a copy of the eBook, of course, but I ain't never sent ol' JB no ten bucks. Maybe that's why he ain't never tole me where that page is.

Can't wait to see the videos. There are so many things from the proper consistency of thinset to properly positioning a tile that only a video can make clear.

Well, either a video or an apprenticeship.

And we can all find out how JB keeps his white sneakers clean.
