Kerdi band same as Kerdi Waterproofing Membrane?

Looking at having to buy 100ft of Kerdiband to waterproof the joints in 300sq/ft Ditra. At $30 +tx for 16ft, ends up $200! Today looked, felt, pulled and stretched the Kerdi Membrane and the Kerdi band and they seem the same. Could i not just cut strips of the membrane as you get a lot more for $129?

Otherwise i could just apply a 4" wide strip of roofing membrane but that seems so uncouth!

Not really sure why i am even asking as i know what you people with an endless supply of homeowners money will say, "give schluter another $200, don't be so cheap"!

Welcome, Pete.

You can certainly use strips of Kerdi for that application if you like, but the Kerdi is twice as thick as Kerdi Band and causes more of a bump in the Ditra surface.

Some people never buy Kerdi Band for any application, others of us use it whenever possible. Dealer's choice.

My opinion; worth price charged.

As a first time user I had no problems using the membrane rather than the band. But if you are new to this, do some practice strips on a scrap of drywall and get comfortable with it before you "experiment" on your house!

As said, the only thing is that the Kerdi membrane is thicker than the banding material. If you apply it properly, it will be waterproof either way.

IIRC the OP's concern is cost. I found a source for under 100 compared to Pete's 200.

You know of a cheaper source for Keba?

Schluter's list is $92.48. Seems you should never be paying more than list. They do sell shorter rolls, although the rate per foot is higher.

For stock items, my local tile store beats any of the internet sources. Although you would not know that if you called them.

Looks like my link has your price beat by a penny.

Thanks Larry. I have a good local source as well. Just trying to help the OP out who thought it was 200.00.

Thank you for all the help! I went back to Home Depo and kerdiband did seem thinner than the membrane. I am in Canada, only place near me i believe is Home depo, 16.5' is the only role they sell at this one. It is $29.99. I assume our prices are a bit higher. Eg, the 325 sq roll of ditra is $695 or so, I saw it on Amazon for $415 inc shipping.
