Need Help in evaluating tiling job
Hi, I'm new to the forum, and was wondering what your opinion was of my newly tiled shower floor. Does the drain look O.K.? What about the grout? Job done about four weeks ago.

Hi SuzyQ, welcome, the grout looks alittle punky. Looks like it is wet in areas. Nice job on the drain cut out. Now that I looked again that doesn't look like the correct drain.

drain is correct for this type of application...it looks like an Oatey adjustable. The grout does look washed out though. Maybe too much water when you were grouting???

Doesn't Oatey have squarish holes Michael? That looks like a regular concrete floor drain. Punky= funny looking. Suzy, did you see the guys do this? Is there a pan in there?

Welcome, Suzy.
You sure that grout ain't wet? Ain't s'posta look like that unless part is wet and part is not. That's downright ugly lookin'. No offense meant, of course.
Not sure about the drain. Doesn't appear to have the telltale white PVC ring around it like an Oatey, Michael. But it could be the picher.
But for sure I can say the tile doesn't slope to the drain on the last tile. Is that tile at least dropped a little lower than all its neighbors? It is a nice cut-out, though.
This your own work, Suzy, or you fixin' to blame soemone else?
My opinion; worth price charged.

muskymike: I don't know what you mean by a regular concrete floor drain as I have never seen any but this one. I did see the demo'd floor and what I saw was a red vinyl liner with a concrete bed over it. Man said it did not leak don't know how he knew this. He said the wetness was due to the prior tile and grout breaking down. It was 13 years old. Is there a way to clear up the punky looking grout. The shower has never been used therefore no water has been on it !?!

You can get a grout colorant and paint the grout lines to make it look better. The drain I was referring to is just a 2" drain that usually is in a basement floor. I'm not familair with Oatey drains I only use Suiox Chief and Kerdi.

CX: No Offense taken.
This work was done by a licensed craftsman. His card said he did bathroom and kitchen remodels. Had references and pictures of past jobs. The grout has been like that since the guy left four weeks ago. We were hoping that it would all turn one color (preferably Tumbleweed by C-Cure)but it has shown no signs of changing. About the drain I have no idea what kind it is. I was promised one that had adjustable legs on it but that's not what I got it seems to be a fixed drain screwed in, possibly some kind of extension to the drain pipe (another pvc pipe was placed over original pipe to make it higher but it stills falls short of the tile by about 1/4 to 1/2 inch). I'm not sure that it will prevent water from seeping under tile !?! I know that water drainage will be a problem as I was told to use towels to sop up water on floor after showering. The installer said that it was the 6" X 6" tiles that made it impossible to get the slope right. No, the tile around the drain is not dropped any lower it is flush with the rest.

Hi Suzy.
Does the floor have a slope in it, towards the drain? And what color should the grout be? More toward the darker shade we see, or the lighter more predominate shade in the picture? And this variegated grout color scheme we see....I take it it's been like this since day one?

hmmmm...with that piece of information I'm not too clear that we are getting the full picture here. Is this a complete new floor set on a new pan with liner? Or new tile/grout over existing tile/grout? Or......??

The Installer should have put a slope on your shower floor the
6*6 has nothing to do with it if he knows what he is doing but him telling you to use towels to sop up the water after you shower tells me he dosn't.
I would have him redo your floor now or it will cause you problems later. It should have a quarter inch slope from walls to drain.

Sounds like he didn't use the proper drain for a shower. The ones I use for that type of shower has a clamp ring on it that holds the pan and then mudded over to the drain where the water goes in. If water gets through the tile and mud it will hit the pan and go in the drain under the mud. That doesn't look like tumbleweed to me just grouted yesterday with tumbleweed.

Mike2: In answer to your question, it is a complete new floor/grout over the existing pan and liner. After demolishing the old floor and looking for leaks the man told me that the pan did not fail it was old tile and grout failure. So he kept the old liner and cement pan and installed the new tile over it.
