We've gone ahead and merged your two threads as it does seem that both relate to the same project. Having all the history in one thread helps readers and contributors follow along, and often avoids duplicate questions and answers.

I was going to make the same suggestion that Tonto did - a LFT mortar might get you to where you want to be. Mix it just a little stiffer than normal, sponge off the tile backs, and back butter them.
If I recall correctly my memory is excellent, but my ability to access it is intermittent.
