I've borrowed our FLIR E8 handheld from the office a time or two; very useful when locating radiant heat lines or inspecting for hot spots in chimney flues.

I think you can get one for a cell phone now but I don't know how effective it would be.

The cell phone accessory units have lower reviewer ratings but at $300 versus $3000 for the E8 handheld unit, the performance to price point looks pretty good.

The current version is the FLIR One Pro LT

Before I retired, I had time to play with some Military FLIR devices. Saw one demo where I put my hand on the wall for a couple of seconds, and for at least 5-minutes afterwards, you could still see the handprint from the video out. The thing could distinguish way less than 0.1-degree temperature differences.

We had one tracker that could lock onto the exhaust of an airplane over 20-miles away and many thousands of feet above ground.
