Michigan Smoking ban

http://blog.mlive.com/right_fit/2009..._set_to_b.html

Any place with atleast one employee that serves food, as of May 10th 2010, you can no longer smoke in this place per new Michigan law.

Detroit Casinos are exempted, you can smoke on the gaming floor however not in the hotel rooms. Along with that, in Michigan, you will not be able to get a smoking room at a hotel/motel.

Only reason I bring this up is b/c I think its wrong and I believe it should be up to the owner of the establishment to allow or disallow smoking. I only say this b/c I know of several bars (one infact, owned by my grandfather) where people come in, smoke and play Keno and drink beer. There are tons of people who goto the bar and smoke. Most small mom and pop bars are very upset over this b/c 90% of their customers cannot smoke. THIS ALSO INCLUDES PRIVATE BARS, such as the Eagles, Moose Lodges and PRIVATE Casino clubs.

2 years ago, a law was passed in greater Grand Rapids, that says we can't smoke within 10 ft of any public door or window. The money they spent to draw up and pass this bill has yet to be paid for by issuing citations. My thought on this is if you're going to have a law, enforce it. The state, could really make a lot of money come May 10th, 2010, by actually enforcing these laws, but I bet they will.

Whats your point of view?

HEY KEN I THOUGHT U GAVE UP THAT NASTY HABBIT, like im one to talk
it has been in effect here in new mexico for about three years now, and i think its a great thing for the nonsmokers, it is kind of a pita for the ones that do (myself included). not even the bars/clubs can u smoke in. you gotta go out side to a designated smoking area atleast 50ft away from the front door. i really think its good for the resturants tho. i love haveing a smoke but i hate the smell when somone else is smoking. i wash my hands every time i come back in from smoking. i think its just getting to me now. about time eh

I'm not smoking jeff. My only big complaint with the rule is the PRIVATE bars/clubs that you actually have to have a membership to even walk into the place and not anyone can be a member.

My other complaint would be that the state doesn't even enforce or ticket people in violation with the smoking rule wrote 2 years ago, the one smoking too close to public windows and doors.

If you're gonna spend the money drafting up the law, spend time enforcing it.

Tennessee has a similar law, but allows establishments to allow smoking by placing a sign on the front door prohibiting anyone under 21 from entering. That allows bars, honkytonks and other dives to operate business as usual.

AZ has the same stupid law. I don't smoke. I hate cigarette smoke. But I vot against this intrusion of Big Brother every chance I get. Unfortunately, I don't get enough chances.

This law is a violation of property rights, pure and simple. Once we tolerate the violation of property rights, we can expect more of the same.

I don't smoke (never have), and I detest the stench of cigarette smoke. That does not give me the right (individually or collectively) to tell someone what they can and cannot do on their own property. I am free to stay clear of all property that in some way or shape offends me.

In the case of Michigan, it was a Republican legislator who introduced this bill. My own Republican representative, John Proos, voted in favor of it. I won't forget that - especially the next time he tries to pass himself off as a small government conservative.

They passed it in Wisconsin too. As of July 2010 you won't be able to smoke anywhere.

I'm torn on the issue myself due to the nature of 2nd hand smoking. I think smokers should just sit in a confined 'smoke box' and puff away.

If NOT smoking produced negative affects for other folks then non-smokers should sit in the 'non-smoke box' and I'd have it the other way around.

Sometimes the state has to do certain things which other people (including animals) are incapable of making good decisions for themselves like youngsters, people with learning disabilities, babies, animals, ect. for their benefit.

Patti and I haven't smoked in years, but neither of us is against anyone else doing it. And for once I agree with Dan. It is a gross invasion of property rights, which are at the core of our U.S. Constitution. Next, they try to tell you you can't smoke in your own house.

We have had that here in Florida for years.
I'm glad they pass it because I dont want to smell smoke when I eat anywhere.
Smoke your death stick in your own home, I hope they ban it everywhere in public.

Brian, the precedent has been set for the government to violate your property rights, and, as you have indicated, it meets with your approval. I suppose you should not complain, then, when your property rights are eventually violated with the blessings of the law.

Dan, I would defend the right of the owners of the park to ask you to refrain from smoking. It is their right on their property to do so. Failure to respect the rights of a property owner amounts to trespassing.

Same thing happening here in North Carolina beginning in a few weeks. I agree that it goes to far but as a rabid anti-smoking person and having a daughter who works in a smokey sports bar, I'm kind of excited for her even though she is a smoker. I know that's wrong and admit personal bias is interfering with my usually rational way of thinking. Sorry.
