Paul,
Do your plumbers honor the pipe seals? I've had three plumbers cut them out and told me NEVER use them again. I know on steamers they are vital.

Chuck, check out the USG Durock membrane. It's much thinner than Kerdi-band. Of course, you'd be doing away with your Schluter warranty.

hmmm, thanks John. I am surprised Schluter hasn't come up with there own type of green skin, that would be compatible with Kerdi that could make the transition between plywood and other materials.

Dave,

That's why I do my own plumbing. Once had a plumber cut away the Grohe plastic waterproofing shield and made the shower leak.

Never again

Humm, Durrock membrane is 12 mils and Kerdi is 8...not sure I'd call that 'lots' thinner. Not sure how thin their banding is, but Kerdiband is 5-mils.

If you're continuing the waterproofing out of the shower, and you were using Ditra, seaming it is simple - Kerdiband. One reason they call it a system.

I think that's true only within the marketing department, Jim.

See Post #30 here for a more real-life comparison.

I score the USG membrane at 12 mils, Kerdi closest to 19 mils, and Kerdi Band at about 16 mils. In the real world the USG membrane is a much thinner product. Their banding is simply a narrow strip cut from the same material as the membrane.

Gotta agree with CX on this one...The thickness of a dollar bill is just over .004 (used them as a feeler gauge many times) Kerdi is much thicker than two dollar bills. I've never played with the Durock membrane, only Kerdi, and it is for sure thicker than .008. Their marketing data has got to be a bit off.

The important part is the solid membrane, not the fleece, which is embedded in the mortar. But, comparing apples to apples, Kerdi is thinner. I've only touched the USG membrane, not used it, so I'll defer to those that have as to how it is after installation.

Without having ever taking any type of measurement, I can tell just by handling both products that the Durock membrane is thinner. I can also tell by the results after they are installed, as the buildups with the Durock membrane are much less than with Kerdi.

My comparison was the products as they are sold by the manufacturer, Jim. Most definitely apples to apples. And most definitely the USG membrane is thinner.

And has a much lower permeance rating as well.

Both good products, but there are clear differences. I'll be happy to send you a piece of the USG membrane if you'd like to compare them yourself. I'll send some Kerdi and Kerdi Band, too, if you don't have any on hand. Just PM me a shipping address.
