Question about TR-420 (rebuild bottom of a shower pan)

In this thread this method came up and I guess I never took a close look at it before. It seems like a peculiar way of doing it and I don't fully understand how it's supposed to be done.

It's the method for tearing out the bottom of a shower pan. There's 1/4 inch cbu involved along with a shower pan liner and a surface membrane?

Just wondering if anybody has any further info on this. Page 253 in the 2015 TCNA Handbook.
