I don't smoke, never have. I'm okay with just a non smoking section in a restaurant, they don't have to ban smoking completely, crazy.

Close, John. The next front for the anti-smoke zealots is your car/truck. First it will be illegal if any of the occupants are minors, then it will just be any occupants other than yourself. Eventually it will be illegal to smoke while driving.

Davy, as much as I like the idea, I think it is tatamount to having a 'no pee section' in a swimming pool. The pee spreads just like smoking spreads around the joint.

I think it should be left to the establishment to figure out but for those places that make no concessions for their employees or their welfare I think it sucks to work in a smoking environment.

Perhaps if the restaurant and bar industry or service industry or even the cigarette industry would have demonstrated some responsibility and ingenuity to assist in the problem over the years instead of allowing a free for all, we wouldn't have these types of regulations thrown upon us, I dunno.............I know a smoking and non smoking section was not the answer.

I have been to some bars where smoking was crazy yet they must have had a good air-flow and smoke scrubbers because it was tolerable.

In the end it isn't going to stop smokers from going out no more than it is going to stop me from swimming in a pool some people wizzed in. I think I support that law more than not.

I dont have an anti government conspiracy theory to everything they do.
some will be bothered but they will get over it.
many positive things will be gained with smoking bans.
secondhand smoke causes disease, disability, and death.

This is a rights issue. When we continue to allow the government to tell us what we can and cannot do on our own property we're all in trouble. It's easy for someone to say it's a good idea when it doesn't affect them personally, but watch out. Orwell's 1984 is looking more and more like he merely had the wrong year - it's coming much faster than anyone wants to admit.

More to come

I perfer restruants and bars to be smoke free...

That said, with public health care, you will see more and more control over what you do with your life.

It costs $$$ for cancer care, and then you probably die anyway.

I predict that tobacco will eventually be outlawed.

And just to piss everyone off, I predict alcohol will be next.

OK, maybe not outlawed... but taxed beyond belief, I remember when cigarettes were 25 cents and you could buy them in a machine...

great!
then kids will have a better chance of not being brought up around smoking family members or breathing the crap while in public.
also less of a chance of them getting cardiovascular disease, lung cancer or lung ailments such bronchitis or having asthma attacks.

smoke in your own house, stink up the place and catch it on fire for all we care.

Quote:
The International Agency for Research on Cancer of the World Health Organization concluded in 2004 that there was sufficient evidence that secondhand smoke caused cancer in humans.
think about it, your breathing in smoke.
it doesnt take a bright person to realize that isnt a smart thing to do.

Tobacco-rich NC bans smoking in bars, restaurants

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100102/...na_smoking_ban

Quote:
DURHAM, N.C. – In dozens of states, Gary Richards wouldn't have been able to light up a Marlboro before tucking into his meat-lover's pizza, as he did at Satisfaction Restaurant & Bar this week. But in North Carolina, the nation's leading tobacco producer, limits on indoor smoking have lagged behind those in much of the country.

That changes Saturday, when smoking in restaurants and bars is banned in the state that is home to two major tobacco companies

This came in in the UK about 2 years ago - without much problem really. Im a non smoker, although didnt worry much about being in bars, pubs other places with smoke. Have to say its preferable now however. What none of us had thought about was the imposition of smoke on employees all day long in public places.
Overhearing smokers I have heard mostly begrudging acknowledgement that it has helped them smoke less, which they are pleased about.
That and the fact that its only 27% of people that do smoke in the UK anyway.
Overall public health benfits I would say.

It's a scam

There are no scientific studies on second hand smoke that havn't been debunked . It's the same agenda driven science that the globalwarming nuts use to try to control our lives. You show your studies I"ll show you mine blah blah blah.junkscience.com forces.org/evidence/files/pas-smok.htm

I have always wondered about that. We can agree that smoking is harmful to your health, can't we? Why then would breathing second hand smoke be perfectly harmless? It just doesn't make logical sense. Do our lungs filter out all of the harmful elements of cigarette smoke, and exhale clean, perfectly safe, breathable air?

Not to mention, if you are in a room full of smokers, you are not only breathing their magically filtered, perfectly harmless, exhaled smoke, but the smoke which comes off of the burning cigarettes. Is that smoke harmless as well?

Gimme a break, do you think studies by the tobacco industry which show second hand smoke to be harmless are any less agenda driven?

My kid works at a local sports bar here in Winston-Salem. I hung out there on New Years day to watch the Penn State and Flyers games. The last time I was there, I second hand smoked a carton and a half. It was nice being able to hang out there smoke free but I still agree that this is another case of government running amok.

This is a ridiculous argument, Greg. Of course you are correct. Any person with half a brain can figure out that second hand smoke has got to be harmful.
