Barrier Free Showers

How many of you are beginning to see a trend toward barrier free (curbless entry) showers in your area? The "Aging-in-Place" market is a growing segment of our industry with the aging of the baby boomers. What obstacles do you commonly face in trying to achieve this design for your customers?

Jeff,

I have been doing them down here in Florida for around 8 years.
granted its not 1 a month. was random 2-3 ayear, now its 4-5.
they are all looking for the no curb, curb-less, barrier free wet room look.
some are in their high 60's and older, and I even get 30-50 just
looking for the style.

we just did a knock out one for a customer in Odessa, Florida.

Have only had one barrier free shower request in the past 5 years. It was an addition to an existing home and the framing and subfloor was recessed to allow for a seamless transition. We just floated everything to meet up nice.

We had a couple request a 10" tall curb a few weeks ago but we talked them into a 7.5" tall curb.

The ones that I have done haven't been because of aging-in-place, but they've been because that's what people think is cool. Big tiles are the trend and they want to continue that look into their shower floor.
