Old mud setting techniques

Am curious about wet mud setting techniques.
Can't find any good information on it.
I don't want to use any LATEX additives so I'm using portland cement, sand and water.
Do i then wet the tiles and place them up after putting the mortar up.
Why does everyone want the quick, cheap, toxic way?
Just curious.

Joesph, are you talking about walls? In the old days they would mud the walls and use "pure" to stick the tiles with. Pure is portland cement mixed with water. Thinset will bond much better.

Yes. talking about the old walls.
But only have a few to replace so was going to use the portland cement/sand/and water slurry then a little cement to back butter the tile.
I just don't want the added latex - it off gasses. (VOC's). Something plain and simple. Have two little ones.

The previous owners put some crap bath fitter up over all the tile and they had damaged some of it.
So i pulled it all up and stripped all the glue with hand force (scraper) and olive oil.
Just was wondering if i should do a wet set and let the tiles soak, then add them to the wet cement.

You can use portland if you want to but you can also use unmodified thinset that would work better. No soaking would be needed.
