Tile over Fiberglass panels?

Is it possible to tile over fiberglass panels in shower. These are those 4x8 sheets you can buy and glue up on shower walls. The reason I don't want to take them down is that the wall behind them is patched lath and plaster and pieces of plywood. It would be another project.

Bernie,

I'm not sure we can answer that question. How stable are the walls? do they have any give to them? The usual reason for the fiberglass panels is to save money and the effort to fix the real problem, which is how you got where you are.

In cases were we are unsure of the substrate, we take the walls down to the studs, fix the framing as needed, insulate properly, then install the tile substrate (usually a waterproof foam panel) That way we can guarantee the job will last a lifetime and someone else won't be back on this forum in a few years asking if they can tile over tile over fiberglass.....

Welcome to the forum, Bernie.

We are a creative group around here and love to encourage thinking outside the box. We’re not generally a bunch of nay-sayers. But I certainly wouldn’t do it. It’s bound to be a short-lived improvement.

But the extra work of removing the plaster & ply will greatly increase the expected life span of the job. And it will likely involve less time and money than if you applied tile to the fiberglass now...then replaced that in the near future
