Yes, it happens to the geeks too - dying hard drive...
I was nearly done for the day at work, couple of programs stopped responding on my notebook. Rebooted and...hung on the splash screen.
Rebooted, tried safe mode, command prompt, etc. No joy.
Brought it home, used the Rescue utility (it is an IBM Thinkpad) and was able to get my data files off to an external hard drive.
Used XP Recovery Console to kick off CHKDSK /R. Frozen at 51%.
On the plus side - I did recover my data (mostly work from today). Also, I'll replace the 90GB drive with a nice new 500GB drive.

I had one of my computer (now tiling probably) customers tell me I'm probably the only tiler who is a computer geek. I told him I'm sure there are other tilers who are computer geeks as well. This proves it
PS: sorry about your hard drive. I've had so many hard drives die, fail, etc. that I can't even keep count. Luckily none on my laptop or netbook yet (shhhhhh).

Woke up this morning, chkdsk at 60%. Knew it was a lost cause last night but had to try anyway. I did get all of my data off of it though. I had a spare 400GB drive in the desk so I used that this morning. Most everything reinstalled and functional. A couple of minor programs I'll install next time I need them.
My data is backed up daily, but not until late in the day. I had several hours of changes to the code base of a program I've been working on. The code was checked out to my notebook hard drive so losing that set of data would have really ruined my day.
Howdy Leslie. Always nice to have another geek around.

Lately I've been leaving the laptop at work and just toting my personal netbook around. I can access my work system from home with the netbook. The screen is a bit tiny but it forces me to work less from home.

I've been trying to make that a habit Dave. I changed my work schedule shortly after Christmas...Most of the time I try to stick to 6am-1:30pm. I get more work done the first two hours of the day when no one else is around.

Since you now have so much free time, come on down, plenty of time left from my 14 hour days to accommodate you and get you to pitch in

Have a A305 Toshiba LapTop.. It's nice while it works.. First drive went out after a couple of months along with the MoBo.. Then Worked ok for a few more weeks.. then nother drive.. Worked a few more weeks and now the tird hard drive is being installed innit as I write.. Bought the extra 2 year warranty - just in case.. Toshiba gives you like 9 months to purchase the extra warranty... Guess I'm just hard on the equipment...
