Natural veneer stone over drywall

Quick question for you tile experts. I am installing natural veneer stone on a wall around some windows and up into the peak in this beautiful log cabin home. The drywall is painted. My first thought is to put up my wire mesh and scratch coat but I am concerned about the weight of this product. My main concern is that the mesh should be nailed approximate every 6 to 8 inches but if the studs are 16 on center that will not work. My other option is what I am used to and that is tear out the drywall and instal 1/2 dura rock. I have done quite a bit of manufactured veneer and dry stack but never anything this heavy. I would like to avoid tearing out all the drywall and do the mesh and scratch coat, just wondering if that will work? Also can I use mapei ultra lite mortar or use a type s?

What brand is your veneer? I'm looking at Realstone for my next project and happen to have the install instructions on my hard drive. For this brand, the lath gets fastened through the wall into the studs.

"attach the lath using galvanized nails or staples 6 in. on center and 16 in. horizontally, penetrating studs to a minimum of 1 in. "

You'll want to put a moisture barrier under the lath so the mortar doesn't mush your drywall.
