Old tile tenting
We bought a ground floor condo in Florida, Boca Raton, March 2011. We did not move into the place until Dec. 2011. Three weeks ago we heard a popping sound at 1 AM and found that the tile in the living room had popped up and formed a tent.
This is tile that has been laid down for many years. The "tent" is about 5 -12" tiles long and there are about 5 tiles on either side of the tent apex that have come up.
We can't get two tile installation experts to agree on whether the "tenting" is due to bad installation, to hydrostatic water pressure or to expansion problems. We want to lay a wood laminate on top of the existing tile after "flooting" the floor under the bad tented tiles but can't get agreement as to whether or not we are leaving ourselves open to further tenting under the laminate floor. One opinion is that we have to rip out the existing floor, seal the concrete slab and lay the laminate over the sealed concrete. The other opinion is lay the laminate on top of the repaired existing floor.
Anyone have some experience with this problem.
