newbie: excess mineral oil on slate countertop

Hi everyone!
I am new to this forum and am excited to learn from all the experts out there!
We recently reno'd a 1937 house, including new kitchen and bathroom. We lucked into some black slate - the source was an old snooker table.
We looked around the internet and decided to seal the slate with mineral oil. Last night we cleaned/dried the slate then applied the mineral oil with a dry cloth. This morning we woke up and it still feels oily.

-What can I expect for length of time until the counter no longer feels oily?
-Did we apply too much? If so, should I wipe it off with a new, dry cloth or just wait it out until it soaks in?
-In the meantime, can I set items on my counters or will this leave permanent marks in the seal?

Thanks!
Jesse

I wouldn't seal a countertop with oil that you want to use for food prep,i will say why not use dishsoap in water and try to clean off the excess and see what happens.

Straight mineral oil won't be a health concern, but it won't "dry," either. It won't evaporate at room temperatures. Soap and water should get it up.
