Brian in Ballwin Bath Remodel

Hello everyone..

I'm doing a new shower in the master bath. Onyx shower base, and tiled walls with Kerdi membrane. I ended up special ordering the unmodified thinset per Kerdi instructions and had planned on using this both to stick the Kerdi up and to stick the tiles on the Kerdi. My dilemma is that on the bag of unmodified thinset it says for wall tiles up 4.25". I was planning on doing 12" tiles on the walls. The tiles are porcelain so I'm concerned about using anything but unmodified due to the extra cure time porcelain against Kerdi would require (since both surfaces are impervious to moisture). Does anyone have any recommendation? Will the unmodified that is rated only up to 4.25" tiles work?

Thanks,
Brian

Which thinset exactly did you order?

Hi Brian,

I've never used Tec Sturdi Set, so I can't help you with the particulars of that thinset. I think thats Tec's 'economy' unmodified thinset. Schluter wants you to use a 'premium' unmodified for Kerdi.

Maybe someone else will chime in that has used Sturdi Set, but I think you might want to upgrade to a higher grade of thinset.

Hi Brian, welcome! You want to use TEC Full Set Plus or git your hands on some Ditra Set.

Darnit.. this is what the guy recommended for Kerdi at Tile Source.

Is this sturdi-set stuff ok for the membrane? Also If I'm able to get a more premium thinset as you recommend will I have any issues with the 12" tile on the walls?

Thanks for the advice

ditra set is deffinatly the way to go, like mike said. hydroment makes the ditraset and costs about 12 dollars per bag, thats all we use for kerdi and ditra, cure time is 12 hours at 76 degrees.

Anyone know where to get Ditra in or around St. Louis? I confirmed my tile source store can get the TEC Full set Plus, but if I can get Ditra I will.

If you can't get Ditra at HD, order it from www.tile-experts.com.

Hi, Brian. I'm on the other side of the river from you, and I'm interested in getting some of the Ditraset too. I know the HD's around here usually stock Ditra and some Rondec, but I don't know yet about Ditraset. If I find any I'll let it be known.
