fireplace surround q's

im going to install stone around a fireplace to match the exterior of a house. it is currently drywall. i have access to materials for install, my question is do i need metal lathe or chicken wire and scratch coat before sticking stone to the wall. i have a lot of experience in laying tile, and im sure i can install the stone surround, but wanna make sure it sticks to stay. any ideas?

cepp,
yes you will have to use wire, and then a brown coat. then install your stone.
by stone you are referring to a flagstone/thin veneers stone ?
most have that outside on their house if they have stone.
