Metal trim on ceramic bathroom tile

Need some assistance with a ceramic tile question. I have ugly gold metal trim around the edges of all my ceramic bathroom tile (including shower, baseboard tile, etc). The tile itself is in good shape and I would simply like to remove or upgrade the trim to something more in style. Does this type of trim typically extend below the edge of the tile or is it a simple cap that can be replaced? Any idea on how to proceed. Thanks!

Odds are that the trim goes under the tile. I think it would be hard to remove. Here's a link to an example of the kind of edge I think you have...

Thanks. I believe you are exactly right. The exposed section of the trim is identical to one of the Schluter products. Looks like I'll have to remove the tile completely.

You can cut the edge off the metal with a grinder or an oscillating saw, I have had to do it a few times myself. Then just grout, caulk or apply new edge finish as wanted.

Cutting the middles out would be easy. What happens when you get to the corners ?

Since we don't know what the trim was, and the OP hasn't been back for about seven years, I think it's difficult to know much of anything about it at all, truth be known.
